Tonight our 17 super side added the DDSL Under 17 Super League title to the Leinster Youth Cup that they won so convincingly last Saturday when they defeated Lucan United 5-0 at Shanowen Road.
On a perfect night for football in front of a decent crowd they were slow to settle and Lucan will rue missing two very scorable chances before Conor Kane got in a fine cross from the left which Luke Wade Slater rose highest to at the back post to score with a thumping header. The second came soon after when Jamie Gray curled a brilliant free kick into the top corner from 20 yards. Jamie added a third before half time when he slotted home having been put through by Ross Coyle, he completed his hat trick early in the second half before substitute Mikey Cregan headed home in fine style from an excellent Shane Stokes cross.
A great end to a great season for this talented group of players and their management team of Elliott Morgan, Keith Roche and Joe Byrne but it's also a sad time too as many of these boys were playing their last game in a tangerine shirt tonight before they move on to the next stage of their careers - players like Luke Wade Slater who has seen 11 years unbroken service at SKB and Jamie Gray 10 years. The Club would like to thank them all for their efforts over the years and wish them well in the future.
Thanks for the memories boys.
LEINSTER YOUTH CUP FINAL
SKB 5 v FREEBOOTERS 1
VENUE: MULRAINEY PARK CASTLEDERMOT
A goal up after 30 seconds (Jason Groves) two up less than 5 minutes later (Luke Wade Slater) and when Ross Coyle added a third on the half hour it was a certainty that the Leinster Youth Cup was coming back to St Kevin's Boys after a 21 year absence. To their credit Freebooters pulled one back just on half time but when Jamie Gray (Man of the Match) struck two sublime goals early in the second half the game was over. Freebooters tried hard all through but a hard job was made impossible for them when they lost their centre half in the first half and their centre forward - who was causing some problems - in the second - both through double yellow cards.
The final League game of a marathon season for this talented side is in Shanowen Road on Monday night at 7pm in a winner take all game against Lucan United - it will be a last chance to see some of the finest young players that the club has produced wearing tangerine jerseys - be there!!
Great credit is due to all the players and managers Elliott Morgan, Keith Roche and Joe Byrne who have remained focused throughout this long and protracted season which has been interrupted throughout by International and Inter League call ups for a large proportion of the squad and they deserve just reward for their efforts and hopefully they will have double reason to celebrate on Monday night.
