Under 17 FAI Cup Quarter Final
College Corinthians 4 St. Kevins Boys 3
For the second successive week the long trip to Cork for an SKB team proved fruitless as poor defending was the main cause of our Under 17 Super team exiting the FAI Under 17 Cup. Corinthians are through to the semi final but a definite chance of National Cup honours went a begging for our side after an incident packed game at Corinthians Park. It was a remarkable contest with Corinthians taking charge from the start and benefitting from defensive uncertaintanties to race into a two goal lead - the first in the second minute - with goals from Colin O’ Brien and Gavin Johnson and when SKB were reduced to 10 players on the half hour mark it looked as if the game might be over.
To their credit SKB came into the game eventually and might have pulled one back before half time with Corinthians goalkeeper Dave Coffey making a fine save from a close range header, he was excellent throughout making some very good saves.
The second half opened in a similar fashion with SKB taking control of the game even with 10 men and the defecit was reduced in the 50th minute when Jamie Gray scored following a corner. Corinthians looked to have the game wrapped up when poor defending allowed Colin O’ Brien restore his sides two goal advantage with twenty minutes remaining with a fine header.
But in what was a roller coaster of a second half, SKB got back in to the game again when they made it 3-2 through Jason Groves with only three minutes left. There was still time for Corinthians to make it 4-2 from a penalty by Brian Cotter and for Kevins yet again to reduce the deficit to a single goal when they made it 4-3 deep into injury time with Jamie Gray scoring his second. Corinthians were relieved to hear the final whistle as claims for an SKB penalty went un heeded in the last seconds.
