The run of our Under 12 and Under 16 NDSL Premier teams in the SFAI Danone and Barry Cups came to an end yesterday as the 12's were defeated 5-0 by Lakewood F C in Cork and the 16's lost 5-3 in extra time to Galway Hibs with the Galway side equalizing in injury time to bring the game to extra time. A goal in the first and last minute of extra time was enough to win it for the visitors but the home side will be bitterly disappointed at going out of the competition.
Title chasers St Pauls Artane extended their lead at the top of the AUL Premier A on Sunday with a tight victory over St Kevins Boys at Shanowen Road. A goal from the league’s top marksman Stewy Glen was enough to claim the points in a game that was on tight and tense throughout.
SKB started the sharper and had two good chances to take the lead after seven minutes in,Ross Harrison showed good skill on the right before crossing to Jordan Cromwell whose shot was saved by the feet of Craig Reilly. The rebound fell to Robert Pearson who hit a dipping volley that went just wide.Just a minute later Stephen Cantwell raced onto a ball over the top as St Pauls keeper Reilly advanced. The pacey striker’s first touch took the ball wide but he regained control and lobbed the retreating Reilly but Eric Browne headed clear off the line.
Soon after Eric Kenny played a good ball up the left channel that set Stewy Glen free but his shot across goal was wide of the target. Glen made up for that miss ten minutes later after Brian Malone slipped him in on goal and the prolific striker notched his 17th league goal of the season by firing into the bottom left corner.
Soon after the start of the second half Sean Leavy played a good ball forward that Stephen Doyne met on the volley but his effort went wide. A minute later Conor Dowler slipped in Cantwell on the edge of the box – his strike was wide of the target.
With the game just over tempers flared and both Gavin Quinn and Danny Joyce received their marching orders.
Deep into time added on St Kevins almost snatched a draw. Robert Pearson had a crack that Reilly did well to save to secure the three points for the title chasers.
