Both of our senior teams scored excellent away wins tonight as they continued their great form since the leagues resumption. The Saturday team recorded their third win out of three games with a 2-1 away win at Collinstown FC while the first team kept their promotion Hope's on track with a fine 4.3 away win away to fellow promotion hopefuls St Francis FC.
In what will go down as a game of the season contender, St Kevin’s came away from Baldonnel with the crucial win that saw both sides needing victory in hopes of gaining promotion.
Both teams went into the game this evening at John Hyland Park knowing that they needed 3 points if they wanted to keep their hopes of promotion alive. This could be seen from the first whistle as it was non stop action with both teams desperate to come out on top.
Just three minutes into the game, Stephen Cantwell struck a superb free-kick to put Kevin’s 1-0 ahead. Francis had their own flurry of chances before they found themselves two goals down after another Stephen Cantwell dead ball put Kevin’s 2-0 up from the spot.
Both keepers were kept busy throughout the end to end game which saw one outdo the other on several occasions. Francis pulled one back just before half time, but they were unable to keep it at that when Jordan Cromwell dinked it over their keeper to make it 3-1 at the break.
The second half started just as crazy as the first half ended. Francis came close to getting a second after a miss from six yards out and then had a goal disallowed. In the space of a minute, Kevin’s had a penalty claim waved off. Francis would eventually pull one back minutes later to set up an exciting second half.
Cantwell struck five minutes later for a third time to seal his hat-trick and put his team 4-2 up. Francis refused to give up scoring a third goal to make it 4-3 and they continued to pile on the pressure. A superb defensive display from Kevin’s saw out the remainder of the game to keep Francis at bay.
St.Kevin’s keep their chances of promotion alive with games coming thick and fast. This was a cracker of a game, and with the race for promotion heating up, there’s plenty more to come.
