Great credit is due to both sets of players who tonight produced an excellent and exciting quarter final FAI Intermediate Cup tie with top division side St Mochtas being made to work every inch of the way to advance to the semi-final on a 3-2 scoreline in absolutly appalling conditions throughout at St Aidan's.
Four goals were shared in the first half with the visitors dominant in the early stages and they went ahead after 20 minutes but the game was turned upside down in a ten minute spell before the break - firstly Stephen Cantwell equalised from the penalty spot and then a few minutes later he raced onto a through ball, beat the keeper only to see his shot come back off the inside of the post. In the next passage of play the visitors didn't clear their lines properly and Bobby O'Reilly scored with a scorcher into the bottom corner 2-1, but a lack of concentration directly from the re-start saw Mochtas level 2-2.
The Mochtas winner came in the second half courtesy of a deflection but the game was in doubt up to the very end with Hyland in the Mochtas goal making an excellent reflex safe in injury time to prevent the game going into extra time.
Games like these are decided on the smallest of margins and tonight was no exception but the players and management can take great credit from the performance that will hold them in good stead for the remainder of the season.
