The replay of a drawn game which has produced good football, goals and drama seldom produces the same outcome but that was far from the case at St Aidans tonight for our first team as they faced Verona FC in the replay of the FAI Intermediate Cup 4th round game.
The original tie ended 2-2 after extra-time in Coolmine a fortnight ago and that was the same score tonight at the end of 90+ minutes in a game that bore a lot of resemblance to the drawn encounter with the home side have numerous chances all through that went a-begging or were saved by the Verona goalkeeper who pulled off a string of unbelievable saves throughout the game.
It was Verona who took the lead here but it was all square by half time after Stephen Cantwell converted a penalty. For long periods of the second half SKB totally dominated the game creating numerous chances but the Verona 'keeper again produced a series of top class saves just as he did in the first half to keep the scores level and when Verona availed of a mixup with ten minutes to go to take the lead it looked as if they would prevail.
The introduction of substitute Yuki Saito sparked renewed life into the home side as he ran a tiring Verona side ragged and just as they had done in the first game an equaliser was produced in the 92 minute as Luke Ingram scrambled the ball over the line to bring the game to extra time.
The general feeling among the home supporters at this stage was that this game could go either way and maybe that penalties might have to eventually decide it.
The eventual outcome was one that nobody present could have predicted. Yuki Saito ran amok helping himself to two goals to make it 4-2 before Luke Ingram got his second just before half time in extra time - 5-2. Verona were shell shocked and two further goals in the second period - a third for Luke Imgram and a final minute goal from Jordan Farry finished it at 7-2.
What a game!! Played on a fine night but spoiled to some extent by a very strong breeze / gale blowing across the pitch but credit to both teams and to the match officials for the entertainment provided.
Roll on the draw for the last eight on Tuesday night.
