Sunday in Turners Cross in Cork saw both sides of the coin for SKB as our 12's scored a narrow win over Douglas Hall in the SFAI Under 12 National final while our Under 15's suffered a narrow defeat in the Under 15 decider.
The 12's game was a tense affair with both sides suffering a little from stage fright which resulted in a lack of any fluid passages of play. Despite having majority of possession SKB failed to produce many clear cut chances until Danny Mc Grath pounced on a loose ball to open the scoring in the first half. The second half followed a similiar pattern and despite Douglas Hall applying constant pressure in the last ten minutes SKB looked dangerous on the break with Logan Preston taking a couple of runs forward and Ryan Markey and Mark Tarzan also having chances to add the second and it was a relief to hear the final whistle that ensured another SFAI Cup victory was secured.
The second game was a more open and better game than the first with both teams passing the ball around especially in the opening twenty minutes where both sides had half chances to break the deadlock but excellent goalkeeping from the three goalkeepers that played: David Leonard and Fiacre Pagel for St Kevin's and the Corinthians keeper ensured that the game remained scoreless. The second half again saw chances at both ends but neither side was able to break the deadlock and extra time would be needed. The decisive moment came just before the break in the first period of extra time when Fiacre Pagel jumping to catch the ball was challenged in the air by the Corinthians centre back Eoghan Nash and in the resultant melee the ball was scrambled over the line , while many referees would have given a free out the goal stood and despite everyone's best efforts in the second period of extra time we were unable to grab an equalizer.
The magnificent feat of this SKB group of players should not be under estimated. For a group made up of under 13's and 14's to reach a National Cup final and be defeated so narrowly speaks volumes for their ability and character and they can be heartened by the fact that they are at their own age group SFAI Champions and be proud of their achievements so far this season.
We would like to thank all our supporters - parents - relations and Club members who made the long journey to Cork especially that great Club stalwarth and former Treasurer octagenarian Alex Mc Queen.
