With the Under 17 Airtricity League team having a draw and a win from their opening two games it was the turn of our Under 15's to begin their group games with a home fixture against Drogheda United. Following a long tough and busy pre-season Ger Browne, his players and staff were anxious to get off to a good start.
But much like last weeks Under 17 tie against Cavan-Monaghan they found it difficult to translate their superior possession onto the scoreboard in a game that failed to live up to pre-match expectations and it was Drogheda who came closest to scoring in a dull first half when their number 9 struck the crossbar ten minutes before the break.
The second half saw the home side show more urgency with Bosun Lawel in the middle of the park and Danny Norris on the left both prominent but the breakthrough did not look like coming with some chances going astray. Ten minutes from the end they finally broke Droghedas resistance with Norris making yet another run down the left and his cross was netted by Samuel Ayoola. Five minutes later the points were sealed when Bosun Lawel squeezed a shot under the Drogheda goalkeeper from close range following a scramble in the six yard area.
